Will We Recognize Higher Ed in 10 Years?
Harsh economic and political realities and the pervasiveness of digital technologies are creating pressures for real change in higher education. As these forces persist, we are beginning to see more institutions and organizations impacted. Mergers and closures are on the rise, as are new types of partnerships, business models, and products. What will the landscape look like in 10 years? We’ll look at changes taking place in several areas important to our scholarly communications constituents and consider how we can plan and invest strategically for this new reality.
Program
We are delighted that our program guide and facilitator throughout the day will be Bryan Alexander, higher education futurist, writer, and author of the forthcoming book, Transforming the University in the Twenty-First Century: The Next Generation of Higher Education.

10:15 - 11:00 Evolution: Remaking Elsevier
- Moderator: Kevin Guthrie
- Youngsuk ‘YS’ Chi, Chairman, Elsevier
Elsevier, a leading academic publisher since 1880, is in the midst of a significant transformation. With a portfolio of new acquisitions and a strategy that leverages its investments to bring new products and services to the research and education community, company leadership has turned the ship, focusing activities to align with their new vision of Elsevier as a global information analytics business. ITHAKA president, Kevin Guthrie, will sit down with Elsevier Chairman, YS Chi, to talk about the changing research environment, how those changes have impacted Elsevier's strategy, and the implications for academic research, scholarly communications, and education.
11:00 - 11:30 Coffee Break
11:30 - 12:15 Envisioning a Transformed Higher Education
- Moderator: Bryan Alexander
- Caroline Levander, Vice President for Global and Digital Strategy, Rice University
- Aanand Radia, Managing Director, University Ventures
Many people are thinking about higher education, where it is going and needs to go, and what’s important to retain even as our system continues to evolve. We’ll hear from and discuss the ideas of two leaders who have a vision for a transformed higher education.
12:15 - 1:15 Lunch
1:15 - 1:45 How Will the Higher Education Market Shake Out?
- Doug Lederman, Editor, Inside Higher Ed
We rely on colleges and universities as employers, as a source of talent, and as customers. What do business officers and others say about the challenges colleges and universities in the US face? How does the outlook vary by type of school, and what factors are most predictive of future change? Looking ahead, what might a new rubric for higher education institutions look like?
1:45 – 2:45 The Liberal Arts: Essential or Unnecessary?
- Moderator: Melissa Korn, Reporter, The Wall Street Journal
- Catharine Bond Hill, Ithaka S+R Managing Director, ITHAKA
- Sylvester Johnson, Assistant Vice Provost for the Humanities and Professor of Religion and Culture, Virginia Tech
- Paula Krebs, Executive Director, Modern Language Association
- Ben Schmidt, Assistant Professor of History, Northeastern University
The Liberal Arts and the Humanities are at center of much of our work. They are also in the news more than any other area of study with those opposed decrying its lack of utility and those in favor pronouncing its importance as never more crucial. What is actually happening with the liberal arts, and as the U.S higher education landscape shakes out, what will the liberal arts look like for teaching and for humanities research and publishing?
2:45 - 3:15 Coffee Break
3:15 - 3:45 What Demographic Changes Mean for Us
- Moderator: Bryan Alexander
- Jeff Selingo, Special Advisor, Arizona State University and Visiting Scholar, Georgia Institute of Technology
Across most colleges and universities, the ”traditional student” is gone, and these undergraduates of today are the graduate students and faculty members of tomorrow. How are students changing? What will they look like in 10 years? How can libraries, publishers, and technologists anticipate and address their needs? Given what your organization does today, will continuity in your services work well or are there ways you’ll need to change?
3:45 - 4:45 Can Most of Us Persist?
- Moderator: Roger Schonfeld, Ithaka S+R Director, Libraries & Scholarly Communications, ITHAKA
- George Fowler, University Librarian, Old Dominion University
- Simon Ross, Chief Executive, Manchester University Press
- Judy Verses, Executive Vice President, Research, Wiley & Sons
- Elaine Westbrooks, Vice Provost of University Libraries and University Librarian, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Market consolidation and the rise of platforms and shared services mean that more can be done centrally than ever before. We are continuing to see this in the scholarly communications space. The vast majority of libraries and publishers that compose the scholarly communications ecosystem are small. Even for larger research libraries, there are now a handful of library systems providers, and publishers are delivering end-to-end services directly for researchers. Will the libraries and publishers in our ecosystem today persist? What strategies are needed to live in a world where scale seems to win?
